Where are the fireworks celebrations this year?
While some places such as MCC have decided to cancel their celebrations this year, we have found several other places that are continuing to invest in celebrating Independence day regardless of today’s economy.
Here’s a list of places to watch the fireworks celebrations in the East Valley along with maps and directions.
Gilbert’s Old Fashioned 4th of July Celebration
- Where: Mesquite High School
- When: Gates open at 4pm
- Fireworks Display: 9pm
- Activities: contests, games, inflatables for the kids, community exhibits
- Notes: Chairs, blankets and umbrellas are welcome. Coolers will be inspected for sealed water containers. No pets, alcohol, tobacco, weapons or glass containers. Check out the site for more information.

Chandler’s 4th of July 7up Fireworks Spectacular
- Where: Tumbleweed Park
- When: Begins at 4pm
- Fireworks Display: 9:30pm
- Map w/directions
- Activities: live music, free kids carnival, bike parade, classic car display, food and beverage vendors, 35 foot water slide, rock-climbing wall, dunk tank and more
- Notes: $5 parking fee, traffic can be very heavy see notes for tips, see website for list of FAQ

Queen Creek’s Kiwanis Club 4th of July Celebration
- Where: Schnepf Farms
- When: 5pm – 9pm
- Fireworks Display: After 9pm
- Map w/directions
- Activities: water slides, entertainment, rock climb, bouncies, games, glow sticks, snow cones, food and drinks
- Notes: Treat your family to a day of fun, food and festivities and experience on of the largest fireworks displays in the Valley

Tempe’s 4th of July Celebration Event
- Where: Tempe Beach Park
- When: Gates open at 4pm
- Fireworks Display: 9 – 10pm
- Map w/directions
- Activities: contests, games, inflatables for the kids, community exhibits
- Notes: $5 – $6 event fee, see site for details and locations
- Items Allowed: 1 Gallon of sealed water per person, blankets, portable chairs and personal cameras
- Items Not Allow: No weapons, food, coolers, skates, bicycles or skateboards and no pets. Check out the site for more information.

Mesa’s 4th of July Fireworks Show
- Canceled: due to lack of funds
- Typically Held at: Mesa Community College

Casa Grande’s 4th of July Celebration Event
- Where: Ed Hooper Rodeo Park and Palm Island Family Aquatics
- When:
- 10am – 4pm: Family Swim Day at Palm Island Family Aquatics
- 7pm: Relay Races and Games at Ed Hooper Rodeo Park
- 7:30pm: Red, White and Blue Family Parade at Rodeo Park - Fireworks Display: 9pm

- Family Swim Day: Activities and games throughout the day of open swim, reduced admission costs
- Rodeo Park: contests, games, inflatables for the kids, community exhibits - Notes: Bring your blanket and/or lawn chair to enjoy the evening activities

Origin
China invented fireworks in the 12th Century to scare away evil spirits. Fireworks were a simple extension of gunpowder, which they are also known for inventing.

Main Colors and the Metals that create the color
- Red – Strontium or Lithium
- Orange – Calcium
- Yellow - Sodium
- Green - Barium

- White – Titanium, aluminum, or magnesium powders
Interesting History Facts
- The first celebration of Independence Day occurred in 1777, six years before Americans knew they would win the war.
- In 2004, Disney found a new way to launch the fireworks without gunpowder. Instead the fireworks are launched with compressed gas and a timer to ignite the fireworks. This allows Disney to launch the fireworks higher and with greater accuracy.

- Largest Fireworks Display: 66,326 fireworks on December 31st, 2006
- Longest Firework Waterfall: Niagara Falls was ignited in 2003
- Most Fireworks Launched in 30 seconds: 56,405 in 2006
